How I Balance School, Social Life, and Self-Care at ASU

Balancing school, a social life, and taking care of yourself can feel like a full-time job, especially at a fast-paced campus like ASU. Between classes, assignments, events, and everything in between, it’s easy to feel stretched thin. Over time, I’ve figured out a rhythm that helps me stay on top of my responsibilities while still enjoying the college experience.

1. I Treat My Schedule Like a Non-Negotiable

The biggest game changer for me was using a calendar for everything. Classes, study blocks, workouts, social plans, even downtime all go in. If it’s not scheduled, it probably won’t happen.

I try to map out my week every Sunday so I know what’s coming. Having a space that makes it easy to focus helps too, whether that’s a quiet corner in my spacious apartment or a change of scenery in the courtyard when I need it.

2. I Prioritize What Actually Matters

Not everything needs 100% of your energy. I’ve learned to identify what’s urgent versus what can wait. Big exams, deadlines, and important commitments come first.

Living close to campus has made a huge difference here. Cutting down on commute time gives me more flexibility in my day, which means less stress when things start to pile up.

3. I Build in Social Time (Guilt-Free)

College is more than just academics. Some of my best memories have come from spontaneous plans, campus events, or just hanging out with friends.

Being in a community where things are always happening makes this part easy. Whether it’s a low-key hangout or something more social, it’s nice when you don’t have to go far to be part of it.

4. I Keep My Self-Care Simple

Self-care doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. For me, it looks like:

  • Getting enough sleep (or at least trying to)
  • Taking walks or going to the gym
  • Having quiet time to reset
  • Staying hydrated and eating real meals

Having access to spaces where you can unwind, whether that’s a fitness center or just somewhere to relax, makes it easier to stay consistent with these habits.

5. I Set Boundaries

This one took time. I had to learn how to say no to things that didn’t align with my priorities. Whether it’s skipping a night out before a big exam or not overloading my schedule, boundaries help me stay balanced.

It also helps being in an environment that supports both productivity and downtime, so you’re not constantly choosing between the two.

6. I Give Myself Grace

Some weeks are just harder than others. There are times when school takes over, and times when I lean more into my social life. Balance isn’t about being perfect every day, it’s about adjusting when things feel off.

Final Thoughts

Balancing school, social life, and self-care isn’t about doing everything at once, it’s about being intentional with your time and energy. Once you find a routine that works for you, everything starts to feel a little more manageable.

For me, having a space like The Cleo Tempe has made that balance feel a lot more realistic, it naturally fits into my routine without forcing it. And honestly, that’s what makes the college experience at ASU so rewarding.
